When the Mountains Became Timber

A Forest That Wasn’t Yet Timber

Long before logging companies arrived in the Appalachians, people were cutting trees. A farmstead required lumber for a house and barn, rails for fences, and a steady supply of firewood. Wood became handles and tools. Small water-powered sawmills turned nearby logs into boards. The forest was already part of everyday life.

But using trees was not the same as having a timber industry.

Much of the central and southern Appalachians remained covered by old-growth forest well into the nineteenth century. Oak, chestnut, poplar, maple, and hickory grew across the lower and middle elevations, while spruce and fir covered some of the higher ground. There was more timber than local communities could use, but much of it had little commercial value for a simple reason: it was difficult to get to market.

Water offered one solution, but not a particularly reliable one. Mountain streams rose and fell with the seasons, and rocky channels could damage logs on the way downstream. Some species floated better than others. Dense hardwoods such as oak and hickory were especially troublesome. A fine stand of timber deep in a mountain hollow might be valuable in theory, but that meant little if moving it cost more than the lumber would bring.

So the forests remained enormous, even as cities and industries beyond the mountains demanded more wood. The trees were there, and the markets were waiting.

What was missing was a practical way to connect the two.

The Railroad Changes the Value of a Tree

The missing connection arrived on steel rails.

As trunk railroads pushed into the central and southern Appalachians during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, they connected mountain communities with markets far beyond the region. Railroads could bring heavy equipment in and carry finished lumber out. But the main lines still ran through valleys and towns. Much of the timber remained high on the slopes and deep in the hollows.

Logging companies solved that problem by taking the railroad to the trees.

Temporary tracks branched from established lines and worked their way into the forests. Ordinary locomotives were poorly suited to the steep grades and tight curves these routes demanded, but geared locomotives such as the Shay, Climax, and Heisler were built for that kind of work. Track crews could extend a line as the cutting advanced, giving loggers access to timber that had previously been too expensive to move.

The change came at an opportune time. Between about 1880 and 1920, growing cities, railroad construction, coal mining, and manufacturing increased the demand for wood. Timber supplies in parts of the North and Midwest were declining. Northern investors and large lumber companies began buying Appalachian acreage and, in some cases, the rights to the standing timber itself.

Sawmills were changing too. Large steam-powered band mills could process far more lumber than the small mills that had served local communities. A logging operation could now cut timber in the mountains, move it to a mill, and ship the finished lumber into a national market.

That changed the value of every tree the railroad could reach. The oak on a distant slope was no longer stranded. Neither was the poplar in the hollow or the spruce high on the mountain.

Companies could now look across vast stretches of Appalachian forest and see not simply trees, but timber waiting to be cut.

Cutting the Mountains

The railroad could reach the forest, but somebody still had to bring the trees down.

Much of that work depended on muscle and hand tools. Two-man crews worked crosscut saws through trunks that could take considerable time to fell. Once a tree was down, other workers removed the limbs and cut the trunk into lengths that could be moved. Teamsters used horses, mules, or oxen to drag logs along skidding paths to landings.

Steep terrain demanded other solutions. Some operations used steam-powered cable skidders that could pull logs from difficult slopes where animal teams could not work efficiently. On other tracts, temporary railroad grades kept advancing into the woods. Track crews laid and moved rail as the cutting progressed, bringing transportation closer to the next stand of timber.

It was hard, dangerous work. A railroad and a steam mill might have made industrial logging economically possible, but neither could fell an oak or trim a poplar. Men still worked beside falling trees and moving logs, often on steep mountain ground. The machinery increased their reach and multiplied what their labor could accomplish.

The scale was changing too. The industrial logger was cutting for someone he would probably never meet. The tree went to a landing, then a mill. From there, the lumber could leave the mountains altogether.

As one tract was cut, the operation moved farther into the forest. Track followed timber, and the crews followed the track. What had once been difficult to reach could now be taken out a trainload at a time.

The Forest Goes Somewhere

The logs leaving the mountains weren’t being cut simply because they could be. Someone wanted the wood.

Sometimes the forest supplied an industry in the next valley. Saltville had been consuming wood long before the great logging boom of the late nineteenth century. Producing salt required boiling brine in large iron kettles, and before coal could be brought in economically by rail, wood fired the furnaces. The surrounding forest was more than a source of lumber. It was fuel for an industrial process.

Galax shows what happened when rail transportation connected the forest to a different kind of industry.

The Norfolk & Western Railway’s Chestnut Creek branch reached Galax in 1904. Around the town stood hardwood forests holding oak, chestnut, maple, and poplar. Rail access offered a way to bring raw materials to manufacturers and ship finished products to distant markets. Companies including Galax Furniture Manufacturing Company and Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Company drew on those resources as Galax developed into an important furniture-manufacturing center.

Other industries wanted Appalachian wood as well. Railroads needed ties, mines needed timber, and expanding cities needed building materials. White oak was valued for its strength and durability. Yellow poplar found its way into furniture and millwork.

That demand helps explain the scale of what was happening in the mountains. The logging crew saw the tree fall. The railroad crew saw the loaded cars leave. But the economic chain stretched well beyond the logging camp.

As long as those markets wanted wood, there was money to be made by pushing the tracks farther into the mountains and cutting the next tract.

Eventually, however, there would be no next tract.

When the Timber Was Gone

Industrial logging depended on moving forward. When one stand was exhausted, temporary tracks could be extended or moved toward another. Crews followed the timber, and mills continued cutting as long as logs continued arriving.

What remained behind could look very different from the forest that had been there before.

Clear-cut slopes were often covered with branches, treetops, and other debris known as slash. Once dry, that material burned readily. Sparks from locomotives sometimes provided the ignition, and fires could sweep across recently logged land with an intensity that damaged the soil itself. Without forest cover, erosion increased and runoff carried soil into streams.

By the early twentieth century, the consequences were becoming difficult to ignore. Concern about damaged watersheds and cutover mountain lands helped bring a federal response. The Weeks Act of 1911 authorized the government to buy land for watershed protection. Those acquisitions eventually contributed to national forests across the central and southern Appalachians, including what became the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests in Virginia.

Forests grew again across much of the cutover land, but the evidence of the logging era did not entirely disappear.

Abandoned railroad grades remained etched across mountainsides. Some became forest roads or hiking trails. Elsewhere, old mill sites left foundations, sawdust deposits, and other traces. Even the trees can tell part of the story. Many forests that appear mature today are second growth, established after the old stands were cut.

A century ago, those mountains represented timber waiting to be reached. Railroads and machinery made reaching it possible, and industrial demand made cutting it profitable.

Today, much of the Blue Ridge is forested again. But it is a forest that has a history.

The mountains became timber, and when the timber was gone, what grew back carried the evidence of what had happened there.
